EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW: YOUR ULTIMATE FAQ GUIDE! Part 2 of 3

6. How much do martial arts classes cost?

it just depends on who’s teaching, what kind of experience they have, how many classes they offer, times, cleanliness of the gym, what kind of equipment that is used. There are so many variables.

We at Hanover Boxing believe strongly in having you participate in a few classes to get acquainted with our coaching staff, schedule, vibe, students etc to get a feel for the place before spending a dime! Thats why we have always offered a FREE semi-Private lesson.  Not all gyms are created equal. Some people want to know price upfront, and there is nothing wrong with that, but it tells me you don’t necessarily care all that much about the actual instruction, training or programming for real life self defense. Do you really wanna learn how to defend your very life or your loved ones from the cheapest gyms or coaches in town, “good training isn’t cheap and cheap training isn’t good”.

Here we’d rather you see what our training  is like and on that first night we go over the pricing, the schedule, and answer all the other questions you have about training with us so you can make an informed decision based on all the available information.

Some gyms are cheaper yes, but they have second hand equipment, don’t invest in keeping their space clean from skin diseases with hospital grade Anti-fungal, Anti-Viral, Anti-Bacterial chemical cleaning solution, they only offer Inconvenient, limited times or you have to travel to a different city for more available class times, then that’s ok to pay for their services, Thats just not us.

The industry standard for MMA gyms is about $150-$200/month depending on what’s offered. Even with 15-16 classes a week in EACH program, comp teams, and a clean gym with updated mats, heavybag railing system and some of the most heart invested coaches you’ll find in a gym We are STILL less then the industry standard.

At the end of the day, your paying your coaches for a result whether it be better fitness for a mom or dad that want to keep up with their kids, more defense and empowerment for an assault victim, or a more confident child that’s being bullied, We want to give you the time it takes to get the result you’re looking for!

7. How often should I train each week?

We recommend 2-3 times a week to slowly and confidently stay on track with your goals.

On average our students take 1-3 partner drill classes and 2 bag or fitness classes to get a well rounded technical and physical program.

Thats the best part about our club! You can come to whatever you wanna come to!

People that hate treadmill cardio take advantage of our fitness and bag classes.

Fighters take advantage of our technical partner drills, heavybag classes and sparring classes.

Some of our students never see the inside of the ring and just enjoy training in a legitimate martial art until they’re more confident in taking it to the next level.

All our welcome to come to whatever they want.

8. What should I expect in my first class?

Your very first class in Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will be the warmup, then separate from the class to show you the stance, footwork, then move onto the first few punches and combos. Kickers will learn a kick or two and boxers will learn a defensive tactic they will tie into the combos we did before! Then we will finish with an ab work. Bring a water in case you get thirsty. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will be warmups, followed by drilling, then rolling.

The adage I use is “We’re not afraid of the unknown, we’re simply afraid of what we think we know about the unknown.”

So, that first class is to ease anxiety in a social setting especially in a sport that has such a built up stigma on violence. You will love your time here!

9. Can martial arts help me lose weight or get fit?

Let’s be honest, it takes much discipline to achieve goals that aren’t normal to our everyday life, especially when it seems like such a long journey. Now, compound that with all the times you set out to do it just to fail or go back to easy and convenient habits. Makes it seem like an impossible task! You FEEL like “fit people” are looking at you at the gym, judging you, wondering what you’re doing on “their” equipment etc no wonder you’re not seeing results!

Well, we’ve had a gentleman lose 110lbs with us, a woman lose 60lbs, and another gentleman lose 80lbs and a slew of other 10-30lb losses!

It’s just a fun way to workout while investing in your own skillset. “That’s it? Class is over already!” Is  what I continue to hear til this very day! lol We make it so the drudgery of working out can actually have a fun, safe and empowering feel about it!

10. What is the difference between striking and grappling martial arts?

In fighting and self defense there are 3 major categories you may find yourself in in an altercation or fight.

Free Movement- this is the stage we’re no one has a hand on you and you don’t have a hand on them. Which encompasses striking arts like Boxing, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. Where you use parts of your body to strike, eg fists, knees, elbows, and/or kicks

Clinch-We view this category as anytime someone has a hand on you and can control you by grabbing with one or two hands. In an effort to off balance, or establish fear/control. These arts encompass this category, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and some of the self defense we do addresses this phase of an attack.

Ground- this is when a fight ends up on the ground, whether  intentionally or unintentionally you find yourself there. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu addresses this phase of combat. It’s a catch 22 There are certain situations that you absolutely never want to be on the ground. However, learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will make your time on the ground as minimal as possible. You’ll have a choice…standup and run, or stay there and inflict tremendous damage on someone.

Here at Hanover Boxing we address all these phases of combat and you have the ability to focus on one or all.
