Compiled a list of the frequently asked questions! Part 1/3
Here are some of the FAQ to help you in your martial art journey this year!
1. What is the best martial art for beginners?
The one you’d like to train in! To be honest there are many legitimate martial arts out there that could potentially save your life. I personally would tailor a program to your propensities, physical attributes, line of work, etc you wouldn’t want to do judo in the aisle of a plane if you’re US Marshall, or throw a spinning heel on gravel, and so on.
Personally, you should pick the one that you enjoy the most. If you don’t like the ground, Boxing and Muay Thai are a great addition to becoming safer walking around town. If you don’t wanna trade blows or you have a job that frowns upon it then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu would better suit your needs. If you’re just wanting to do a physical hobby then I’d pic the one that appeals to you the most. Fortunately, we have stand up arts, grappling arts, and an art designed for self defense as well!
So whatever you’d like to choose we have something for you.
2. Do I need to be in shape before I start martial arts?
Absolutely not! You wouldn’t go to a tennis player and ask them how to run a marathon, right? That doesn’t really make sense. What better way to condition your body for martial arts than DOING MARTIAL ARTS. It will help by conditioning exactly what you need your body for to do. I’ve seen guys that can bench 500lbs get owned by a 30 sec bag work session or a 180 lbs Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu hobbyist. Condition your body for what you want it to do!
Also, it’s easier when you have someone mapping out an action plan so all you’re responsible for is showing up, let us take care of the work.
Short story: I had a guy decide he didn’t want to train until he can run 2 miles, cuz he couldn’t keep up with the class, then he said he’d “come and see us”.
Two years later I see him in a grocery store and he looked a lot heavier than he did when I last saw him. I asked him “how is the 2 mile run coming along, are you ready to start training?” He hung his head and said “I actually never started that”.
Take action now! We can scale our classes to your fitness level, yes it’s true we will push you BUT only when you’re ready to go to the next level!
3. How long does it take to get good at martial arts?
How good will you be at anything after a week, a month, a year? Progress not perfection! I hate to sound like a politician but “it depends”. lol are you training 5 days a week or 1 day a week? Are you training 5 hours once a week or 5/1 hour sessions a week? Are you a highly attuned collegiate athlete then you can probably get away with 1-2 days a week. Is this your first attempt at martial arts but you’re physically fit? Then maybe 3-5 classes a week or maybe it’s your first attempt at fitness as a whole? Then maybe 2 days a week for about a month or so then add another. Etc.
It really is up in the air!
Here at Hanover Boxing Club all our classes are designed to give you the ability to pick several different classes a week without locking anything in stone. You may come and go as you please with unlimited classes and programs. YOU get what YOU want from YOUR training! That’s it!
4. What gear or equipment do I need to begin?
Nothing, we have it down to a science. When you are ready to take action and commit to investing in yourself you”ll have already been given all the equipment you’ll need for the program you’re taking. It’s my job to make sure you have an easy transition into training at a high caliber gym!
5. Is martial arts safe for beginners?
Is the sun hot? lol yes! Everyone starts somewhere! And with around 15 beginner classes each week for all of our adult programs we have an abundant opportunities so all the coaches here can help to make sure you’re learning this appropriately and effectively! And with 7 more additional classes for advanced practioners, it doesn’t get tedious while training long term!
6. How much do martial arts classes cost…to be cont.
